Belize Mayan ruins tours
The Belize Mayan Ruins of Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit lie to the south in the beautiful Toledo District and are reachable by road from Robert's Grove.
Lubaantun is the largest Mayan site in Toledo sitting high on a ridge above a valley cut by the Columbia River. This site is well known for the many miniature clay artifacts found among the ruins which were thought to be charm stones which were used in Mayan rituals. This city flourished during AD 730 to AD 890. It’s sudden abandonment soon after this time remains a mystery, as is it's construction with large black slate blocks instead of the traditional limestone. This was a site of special significance to the Mayan people and holds on to it's secrets to this day.
Nim Li Punit is a ceremonial center with splendid views and 25 stelae, 8 of them carved with the ancient cities rulers. Several of the stelae are unfinished which suggests a sudden halt in work. There are three plazas on this site and several step pyramids. One of these, the plaza of the Stela in the South group, is believed to have been used to track the stars as several monuments along the terrace of Structure one mark the location of solstices and equinoxes.
