After just one weekend in Placencia we decided to buy some beach property for a winter get-away cottage. That was in February 1994. We'd been on vacation in Key West visiting friends when a cold front swept through southern Florida. The prospect of spending our last weekend in the cold and rain almost sent us back home early to New York City. Luckily Bob remembered hearing about Belize at a dinner party we'd attended a few weeks earlier.

 "How'd you like to spend the weekend in Belize?" he asked a freezing Risa who had left all her sweaters in New York. "It's only an hour-and-a-half from Miami."

But it wasn't until we began to design our beach house that the idea of creating an inn started to germinate.

We were at a restless point in our creative and professional lives. Risa had been in Public Relations nearly 30 years, and Bob was bored with his land development business. The time was ripe for a new adventure...
